You only have to keep these 5 things in mind when planting succulents in an outdoor garden:

• Sunlight – Plant succulents in an area in the garden that gets 4 to 6 hours of morning sunlight every day. 

As we previously discussed, there are types of succulents that need direct sunlight to bring out their full color but generally, avoid locations that will expose the succulents to the harsh rays of the afternoon sun.

• Water – Succulents already store plenty of water. Giving the soil water while it’s still moist will lead to root rot and eventually kill the plant. Only water the soil when it’s dry to the touch. 

A good way to test the dryness of the soil is to insert a stick an inch deep. If the tip of the soil feels dry to the touch, then it’s ready to receive water. Always water the soil and never the plant itself. Make sure it gets a thorough soaking. 

During summer you might find yourself watering the succulent every seven to 10 days and rarely in the winter months. 

• Soil – Well-draining soil such as a commercial mix or sandy soil is best for succulents because these types of soil allow moisture to escape faster. Add pumice, lava rock, or coarse sand to further improve drainage. 

Fertilizer is not necessary but won’t be harmful either. Best time to fertilize the soil is early spring or during the growing season and never more than once or twice a year. 

• Pot – Planting outdoor succulents in a pot is a good idea if you live in a region that experiences cold, frosty weather. The best choice of pot is one that’s made of terracotta or unglazed ceramic which are both porous and facilitate moisture to escape along its sides. 

• Pests – Succulents naturally attract pests such as mealybugs and aphids that feed on the sap. To keep pests away from your succulents, spray them with organic neem oil and remove dead leaves that have accumulated nearby. 

If you see white, feathery substances on the leaves, these are the residue from mealybugs. Wipe these substances with a cotton ball soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Succulents are beautiful by nature and add life, color, and excitement to any area they are displayed in. But a little embellishing can go a long way in making your succulent plants stand out even more.

Succulents are my favorite plants. I’m often told by my friends that I’m obsessed with these flowers, but let me explain what are succulents and what they are good for, and you’ll understand how my passion started. 

Succulents refer to all types of plants that are able to store water and can withstand dry spells. It’s name comes from the latin “succulentus” which means full of juice or moisture. They have the unique ability to store water in leaves, roots and stems, which gives them a swollen and fleshy appearance. 

Succulents are sun loving plants and a warm environment is necessary for cultivation. However, a scorching sun can bleach the leaves or turn them brownish. On the opposite, not enough sun exposure can cause the stretching and elongating of the plant. The perfect temperature for succulents is between 10 °C (50 °F) and 30 °C (85 °F).

Where do succulents grow naturally? 

There are a few places in the world where these plants can thrive. North and South America, and parts of Southern Africa host about 10,000 different species and about 2,000 “members” of the cactus family. 

Are succulents the same as cactus? 

Yes, all cactuses are succulent plants, but not all succulents are cactuses. Cacti or cactuses are “distant cousins” and they usually have specific characteristics, such as:

• Areoles (small areas that bear spines, thorns and hairs)
• Large flowers 
• Produce fruits, most of them edible. 

The biggest cacti is about 66 feet tall and weighs about 4800 pounds. Some species can survive from 15 to 300 years.

What are succulents used for?

Succulents are a great choice for an outdoor garden as well as for indoor plants. They release oxygen 24/7 and keep a perfect level of humidity, so you can really live a healthier life with them around. 

Some succulent plants, such as Aloe, are known for being helpful with burns and have been used for cosmetics since many years ago. Note that some people might be allergic to some substances found in the sap inside the leaves. 

What’s the difference between succulents and air plants? 

The main difference is in their leaves. Succulent plants are a unique type of plant with leaves that are thicker and have a rubber like texture. Unlike air plants, they prefer less water, and don’t thrive in very wet soil. They need water, but it’s important to know that overwatering can cause the roots to rot and the plant to die. Underwatering can stop the growing process. The key to a healthy succulent plant is fewer but deep waterings. That means you should allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

The most common species of succulents are: Sempervivum, Echeveria, Aloe Vera, Agave, Crassula, Stapelia or Starfish Plant. 

Do succulents symbolize anything? 

Some people believe that they bring good luck. The Jade plant, for example, is well known for being a plant that attracts wealth and its presence in the house or in the office is considered a sign of wellbeing. 

Succulents as an indoor plant

A few years ago, I received a housewarming gift from my husband, a nice mint and golden bowl filled with some colorful plants. It was a beautiful Echeveria. I fell in love with these plants and since then my collection has grown a lot. 

All the information I got, at the time, was that they were low maintenance plants and that they will live a long period without water. The more I started to research and get more succulents, I realised how special these plants are. I can now honestly say that I found a hobby and a passion for life. Watching them grow and thrive is a unique experience.

The pot you decide to use for the plants is very important. You can choose different sizes, colors and textures, but what truly makes the difference is the material. 

• Ceramic pots will draw the moisture from the soil, but they are quite heavy and tend to heat in the sun. 
• Plastic containers mean less watering but it’s mandatory to have a drainage hole at the bottom
• Wood planters can hold a lot of moisture and with time, the container may rot. 

All the materials have pros and cons and at the end of the day it’s your choice. 

Soil is a vital part of growing healthy and happy succulents. You should consider a mix of porous soil, coarse sand and perlite, which is an additive that allows water to drain easily. Also, consider buying a pH test kit to discover if your soil is acid( pH below 7) or alkaline (pH over 7). Succulents prefer neutral or slightly acid soil and you should know there are a few ways to increase or decrease the pH of the soil. Ground or powdered lime has the ability to raise the pH and ferrous sulfate can be useful in lowering your pH.

The most common combination for a cacti is one part potting soil and two parts coarse builder’s sand. This soil recipe will benefit the cacti on the long term, because it will create proper drainage. 

Can you put succulents and cacti together?

Yes, but it depends on the type of succulents or cacti. For example, Schlumbergera is a type of cactus that prefers a low light environment and it’s a great indoor plant. Aloe and Agave, are sun loving succulent plants, and are suitable for an outdoor garden. You should choose succulents and cactuses that have similar needs in terms of light and water. Succulents demand a bit more watering and this could harm the cacti, if grown together. A big pot with a good drainage is necessary, regardless of the plant type. For plant lovers, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your succulents grow strong and healthy. There will come a time when your succulent grows too big that you will have to repot or transfer it to another container. 

If your pot is too small, the succulent’s roots won’t have enough room to grow. Likewise, the soil will not have the proper air circulation that’s needed to remove moisture. 

What Is Repotting?

Repotting is the act of transferring a plant to a larger pot for the purpose of providing it with the proper conditions and a sustainable environment for growth. 

It’s a simple process that can be daunting for new and experienced plant lovers.  If you repot a healthy succulent the wrong way, you will end up killing it in the process.  

The good news is that we’ve written this article to teach fledgling horticulturists how to repot. After going through our step-by-step guide, you’ll have the confidence of an expert and be prepared to transfer your succulent plant to its new home.

There are two ways to repot.  The first is to transfer the plant to a new pot filled with fresh soil mix.  The second is to change the soil without transplanting it to a new pot.  

Follow our step-by-step guide to keep your succulents alive and thriving for a long time.

Step-By-Step Guide To Repotting Succulents

Before you start repotting, prepare all the materials you need including your plant, a new pot with drainage holes, fresh succulent soil mix, water, shears, and gloves. 

You also have to make sure that you have the right pot for your succulent. 

We recommend that you choose a pot that’s made either of unglazed ceramic or terracotta. These types of pots allow moisture to escape along its sides so that the soil can dry out faster.

As you well know, keeping the roots immersed in a moistened environment for a long period of time will cause them to rot. Once the roots rupture, an infection can set in; compromising the health of your succulent. 

Also, check that the bottom of the pot has a drain hole with a mesh net to allow excess water to escape.

If you are repotting a cactus, make sure to wear gloves and use a kitchen tong so you can complete the process without getting hurt.  

Step 1: Water your succulent thoroughly a day or two before your scheduled repotting date. 

This simple hack will make it easier for you to remove the plant from its pot. It is also important to hydrate your succulent before repotting to lessen the amount of stress your plant will undergo during the process.  

Step 2: Gently remove the succulent from the pot. 

Turn the pot sideways while holding it at the base. Try loosening the soil with a stick. Gently pull the plant out of the pot. If the roots are tightly wounded and your plant cannot be removed by pulling,  you may opt to break the pot.  

Step 3:  Clean the roots.  

Remove as much soil as you can from the roots by gently brushing or tapping them. Handle the tender roots with care. Use sharp shears to cut off all the brown, black, or damaged roots. 

If your plant is severely root bound, trim about ⅔ of the root mass. Wipe the roots with a damp cloth. Air-dry the plant in a cool place for 3 to 5 days.  

Step 4: Replant the succulent in a new pot that is no more than 2 sizes bigger than the old one.  

If the pot is too big, your plant may suffer from root rot.  Fill ⅔ of the pot with succulent soil or free-draining mix.  Place the plant at the center and add more soil until the roots are fully covered. Make sure that the leaves are sitting on top of the soil to avoid rotting.

Step 5: Gently press the soil to remove air pockets. 

Water lightly, just enough to moisten the soil. Place the pot in a cool and shaded area. Leave the plant undisturbed for a few days. Avoid overwatering to avoid damaging the roots.

What To Do After Repotting Your Succulent

After transplanting your succulent, it will undergo an adjustment period. Do not worry if your plant appears weak and thirsty. Refrain from watering your plant until 7 days after repotting. This will allow the roots to fully recover from the stress of getting transplanted.

Succulent soil mix contains adequate nutrients. Do not fertilize your plant for six weeks to prevent damage.  

When Is The Best Time to Repot?

Repotting at the right time is essential to the health of your succulents.  You cannot just transplant on a whim because it can cause irreversible damage to your cherished plants. 

The best time to repot is before the growing season starts. By doing so, you allow your succulent to acclimate to its new home.  

If your plant is summer-dormant, repot it in the fall. If your succulent is winter-dormant, you may repot it in the spring.   

Here are the telltale signs that it is time to repot your succulents.

The plant is starting to outgrow its pot.  

It is time to repot when you see roots coming out of the drainage holes.  This means that there is no more room for your plant to grow so it needs a bigger pot.  

The plant starts to droop and looks unhealthy even if you give it sufficient water and sun exposure.   

This means that your soil is due for a change because it no longer provides the nutrients your plant needs to stay healthy.

Your succulent stops growing.  

If your succulent appears healthy but is not growing after the dormant phase, it could mean that the soil lacks nutrients or the roots no longer have space to grow.  

The soil does not get soaked when you water the plant.

 When the water drains too quickly, it means that there are too many roots already and there is too little soil left in the pot.  

Many offsets have grown around the base of the plant.  

When this happens, the offsets need to be separated from the mother plant and given their own place to propagate.  

Your succulent looks very sick.  

This is an indication of overwatered and rotting roots so an emergency repotting is necessary to save your plant.

Succulents mature out of their pots in varying time frames. Most varieties of succulents should be repotted between 12 and 18 months.  

There are slow-growing succulents that can thrive in their pots for a few years before it requires transplanting.  For these types of succulents, make sure to change the soil regularly to keep them well-fed with nutrients.

If your plant has wilted, do not repot right away.  Soak the soil in water and wait for it to perk back up before repotting.  Also, do not repot during extreme weather to avoid stressing the plant out.

How tall will Ponytail Palm get? Outdoors, Ponytail Palm can reach a maximum height of 20-feet or 609cm. If you’re worried that your ceiling isn’t high enough, when grown indoors, Ponytail Palm can only reach a height of 4-feet or 121cm.

This is a type of indoor succulent that is easy to care for. All Ponytail Palm needs is 3 to 6 hours of partial to full sunlight and an average room temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 degrees Celsius.

Ponytail Palm does not require much water. Like other succulents, give it water when the soil is completely dry.

Orchid Cactus
